Show Dell you want Linux preinstalled

22 February 2007

Dell Idea Storm: a digg-like site where users submit suggestions for Dell, and the suggestions are made popular by ‘votes’ — where you vote for the ideas you like best.

As of now, it turns out that the most popular suggestion on the site is to have Linux preinstalled. Every vote counts — bump that vote count up! No registration required. Scratch that.

Got my Mugshot on the web

21 February 2007

I just found out about Mugshot. It’s kind of like a Web 2.0 aggregator. With Mugshot, you can add external services to your account like a fake blog (MySpace), a real blog (WordPress), YouTube, digg, flickr, etc. and it will aggregate them into your profile page.

You can then get notifications of when people in groups update material on their various external services, like writing a blog post, or uploading a photo. It’s quite hard to understand the whole thing if you go to the Mugshot site, I’ll admit. But, when boosted by the nice integration of their desktop client (runs on Windows and Linux), it all comes together.

I’m following a few groups at the moment, including the Ubuntu Lovers group and GNOMErs group and a private group I set up for the family.

Bag a better bargain

21 February 2007

In our letterbox today, we received a most interesting marketing scheme.

Among the usual bills and the like was a brown paper bag with the caption “Bag a better bargain!” branded with the Magnet Mart logo.

Also printed on the bag was this:

20% off any product that you can fit into this bag from Wednesday 21 February to Sunday 25 February 2007!

The fine print included things like not damaging or altering the bag, and if what you stuff into the bag sticks out the top, it’s only allowed to stick out the height of the bag again.

I think that’s a very humorous and interesting marketing tactic, and would like to see other marketers start using their brains just like that.

Awesome way to take screenshots in Windows Vista

12 February 2007

Kenny Kerr’s Window Clippings. This program will allow you to take screenshots of windows in Vista and will generate an alpha-blended PNG with transparent shadows and window borders. It looks really sweet.

How to disable Suspend and Hibernate for all users in Ubuntu

8 February 2007

I’ve known about this trick for a while now; just forgotten to blog about it.

Do you have a computer on which Suspend or Hibernate crashes, or is unstable? Is your computer shared? Do they tend to just click on everything they possibly can, then click Suspend, then OOPS! Look forward to a 5-minute fsck on next bootup! ;)

Well, here, I’m going to tell you how to remove the Suspend and/or Hibernate buttons in the Quit dialog in Ubuntu versions 6.06 and 6.10.
