I’ve updated my Mini Mugshot plugin (download from my WordPress Plugins page or bzr branch) to include sidebar widget support. Also, it no longer depends on fauxML, which will make it lighter for those of you that don’t want to use the [mugshot url] syntax.
By the way, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, this is what the plugin does:
[mugshot-3 http://mugshot.org/person?who=G3yH5GwMpAN1DW]
It adds your Mini Mugshot quickly and easily to any WordPress page/post or now to as a widget in your sidebar.
If you’re a Mugshot user, this is highly recommended, and if you’re not a Mugshot user, I highly recommend you give it a try.

Since starting at TAFE, I’ve found it difficult to see the contents of the whiteboard when I’m sitting up the back of class, so as of today, I’ve been fitted with glasses. It’s kind of weird — everything now looks like it’s straight out of a computer game (except with way more antialiasing and light bloom effects than you’d get in a game).

If you upload an alpha-blended PNG to Gravatar, you’ll find that they’re munging the alpha channel. Currently, my Gravatar is showing with a black background:

(If you see it with a shadow, it means they’ve fixed it. Please let me know in the comments if this happens.)
It’s meant to look more or less the same as this one, which is my self-hosted un-munged version:

Funny thing is, it used to work. WordPress.com avatars have never supported alpha channels, but Gravatar did. Since Gravatar was bought by Automattic, I suspect Gravatar’s transition to WP.com hardware has killed the alpha support. (Purely speculation, though.)

Yesterday, I received a .docx (in MSOOXML format) file from somebody. I was just about to reply with a polite message asking them to transfer $549 to my bank account for a copy of Office 2007, when I tried opening it, OpenOffice.org (2.4rc2, currently in Ubuntu Hardy, and according to Cafuego, it also works in 2.3) popped up, reading it fine!

Dear LazyWeb,
Does anyone know of any tools that can be used to generate Ubuntu live/installer discs from scratch? All the tools and howtos I have found seem to focus on remastering existing discs, i.e., unpacking an .iso, adding packages, packing up the .iso, and burning.
Are there any tools available for generating said discs from scratch?
